Position
trubel&co is eager to welcome a part-time Geospatial Justice Fellow to offer their experience and help elevate the power of geospatial analytics in the pursuit of justice. The Geospatial Justice Fellow will be responsible for both independent and assigned research into various use cases of GIS across multiple social issues. This is primarily a research role, with the responsibility to translate findings into potential case studies, lesson plans, or social media posts. Additionally, this role will act as an internal GIS and Database Manager, creating and organizing internal datasets (primarily those publicly available, such as census, ACS, public health datasets) and managing our internal ArcGIS Online environment. We are looking for someone who can effectively manage these systems, can pursue independent research, and is deeply committed to our vision. Responsibilities
- Geospatial Justice Research (60%)
- Pursue research on real-world applications of geospatial analytics across multiple industries, but all rooted in impact & justice
- This may involve curating case studies of geospatial analytics that advance justice, documenting example maps & dashboards across justice themes, and aggregating sources that articulate the use of data informing public policy
- Align curricular material with various elements of social justice, including but not limited to environmental justice, racial justice, educational equity, health access, LGBTQ+ rights, and economic opportunity
- In 2023, there will be a particular focus in sourcing examples in environmental justice
- This role will work heavily with our Curricula & Pedagogy team to translate research into informed lessons plans & student resources
- Contribute to geospatial curricula, supporting our work to ensure lesson plans and workshop materials reflect youth voice, current topics, pedagogical best practices, and changing sociopolitical contexts
- GIS and Database Management (40%)
- Source, clean, and organize potential datasets, presented in an easy-to-explore fashion for new students at the high-school age
- Manage trubel&co’s internal ArcGIS Online environment; provide insights on the best way ArcGIS tools can enable learning goals
- Recommend improvements in trubel&co AGOL set-up, including but not limited to user profile defaults, group settings, and credit allocation
- Support the creation and sourcing of GIS-specific learning materials (e.g., AGOL best practices how-to guide)
- Ad-Hoc Workshop Facilitation
- Note: This set of responsibilities is not a requirement for this role, rather an additional opportunity should experience, need, and desire align
- As needed, and as desired, lead students in workshop settings, instructing them on how to utilize GIS for social change
- As needed, and as desired, support hackathon partners craft case studies on how GIS may enable new efficiencies and achieve internal goals for environmental justice organizations
The current rate is fixed at $20/hr. The role is part time, averaging 10-15 hours/week, working remotely as an independent contractor. Candidate will have the ability to make their own hours, however team meetings will happen during typical work hours. The role is set at 4 months, with the possibility for extension based on performance and mutual fit. Responsibilities may evolve over time, upon mutual terms and as opportunities open up. Candidate will report directly to the Executive Director.

- Research Experience: You are not afraid of getting into the details. You have a strong ability to summarize both quantitative and qualitative approaches, data, and outcomes, and you can identify and articulate clear insights from distilled information.
- Geospatial Expertise: You geek out about geographical approaches to solving problems. You feel comfortable implementing GIS, sharing its value proposition across a variety of applications, and teaching it to others. You have deep experience with ArcGIS Online; bonus points if you know additional geospatial and data visualization tools as well.
- Independent Operator: You can operate independently and make decisions thoughtfully, without supervision. You excel at time-management and appreciate hitting deadlines. You move quickly, but deliberately; share and receive critical feedback; and bring authenticity, humor, and vulnerability to the workplace.
- Data Whiz: You feel comfortable transforming data into actionable insights, with familiarity in gathering raw data, cleaning datasets, and organizing systems.
- Justice Advocate: An unwavering commitment to justice, especially elevating the voices and experiences of marginalized and frontline communities. You’re passionate about multiple social issues and self-driven to unearth how geospatial solutions can unlock social change.
- Curriculum Knowledge: You have some level of experience across creating learning environments, translating research into curriculum, case studies, and published pieces, particularly for those new to the subject.
- Mission-Oriented: You naturally orient toward impact, and our mission speaks to you. You’re committed to our work and welcome brainstorming ways to expand program reach, deepen curricular options, and diversify content creation.
- Administrative Management: A strong attention to detail and willingness to dive into administrative tasks. You strive to have content organized in an easily understandable manner. Plus if you have experience setting up and managing ArcGIS Online environments.
